As a busy mama of 7 (yes, s-e-v-e-n!) children as well as self-professed introvert, I am constantly striving to mesh these two worlds of noise, activity and busyness with the peaceful and quiet moments that nourish my heart and soul. About five years ago, God led me to a beautiful ministry called SoulCore, where I not only made wonderful lifelong and soul-nurturing friendships but also learned to pray in a way that connected my mind, body and soul like I had never experienced before. In fact, the first time I completed a SoulCore session (on a DVD in my family room!), I remember thinking it felt like I had just attended a mini retreat! I was calm, centered, full of joy and peace, and felt STRONG! After many months of participating in classes I was overjoyed to attend a leader retreat and soon after began to lead my own classes. I can truly say it has been a gift to my heart to see the Holy Spirit working in my life and the lives of women who join in this special ministry. In fact, one thing that is notably clear to all who regularly attend is that little by little, as we pray and meditate on the virtues associated with the Scriptures, we are transformed more and more into His image and are able to see Him working on our human and sometimes weak hearts by infusing these virtues in us! It is such a joy to my own heart to see and feel the graces flowing from leaning in to the Word and receiving such consolation.
So, what is SoulCore anyway? Well, during a class we pray the Rosary (a set of prayers consisting of Our Fathers and Hail Marys, each with a meditation on a different part of Christ’s life) and meditate on Scripture while combining this prayer time with functional movement (stretching, core work, abs, arms etc). Participants are encouraged to go deep into their hearts and be led by the example of Jesus’ own mother Mary’s trust and faith in her Son and Savior and pray through all the movements. Indeed, there is something very sacred and beautiful that happens when we use our bodies and minds to glorify the Lord… Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have received from God?… Therefore honor God with your bodies (1 Cor 6:19-20).
Being a part of the SoulCore family has taught me that our faith is a precious gift that can and should be nurtured. When we take time away from our cell phones, calendars, kitchens, cars and the constant demands of family and work life to enter into quiet relationship with God, something happens to our hearts. We can find that ‘soul rest’ that God asks us to honor in Hebrews 4 which says, ‘for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest’… (Heb 4:10-11). It is a rest that is so desperately needed in our noisy world today, and a rest that nourishes our faith with the fuel of grace and peace so that we can ‘go and be disciples to all nations’. (Mt 29:19) So, whether that nation consists of the people in our family who daily depend on us to love and care for them, or the faith-starved and world-weary people we all encounter every day in our communities, SoulCore can nourish our own souls that we may be the light and love of Christ to others. I am so grateful to God for leading me to a ministry that continues to nourish my faith and provide a place for my soul to rest and gain strength for the journey of life.
