As we celebrate the Risen Christ, we are reminded that joy is not simply a feeling – it is a fruit of a life rooted in Christ.

In the 5th Joyful Mystery, The Finding of Jesus in the Temple, Mary and Joseph search anxiously for three days before finding Jesus. Their sorrow turns to relief and deep joy when they discover Him in His Father’s house. The fruit of this mystery is JOY – the joy that comes from seeking Christ and finding Him again and again in our lives.

St. Francis of Assisi reminds us:

“Spiritual joy is as necessary to the soul as blood is to the body.”

He also warns us:

“A gloomy man cannot be a citizen of the city of God.”

These words invite us to consider a powerful question…

How can a Christian remain joyful at all times?

Christian joy is not dependent on circumstances. Joy does not appear only when life is going our way. While it may feel easier to access in those moments, the Joy of Christ is actually constant and unchanging.

Through our Baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love, peace, and joy of Christ dwell within us. His joy is not something we manufacture – it is something we receive and allow to flow from the depth of our souls.

This is also how joy and suffering can coexist.

Even in seasons of trial, sorrow, or uncertainty, Christ remains with us. When we seek Him – just as Mary and Joseph did – we rediscover the joy that has been placed within us.

As we celebrate the Risen Christ, may we pray for the grace to choose joy in every circumstance and in every experience God has divinely appointed for us. And may we become witnesses of His joy for others.

If you would like to go deeper into this theme, we invite you to read Pope Benedict XVI’s message on Joy from World Youth Day 2012, a beautiful reflection that explores:

  • Our hearts are made for joy

  • God as the source of true joy

  • Preserving Christian joy in our hearts

  • The joy of love

  • The joy of conversion

  • Joy in times of trial

  • Becoming witnesses of joy in the world
