Playfulness is a holy gift that can often be overlooked. In a culture that glorifies productivity and seriousness, reclaiming a spirit of play can restore joy to our minds, bodies, and hearts. Far from being frivolous, playfulness reflects the lightness of heart that comes from trusting God deeply—the freedom of children who know they are loved.
Playfulness has a positive effect on our spiritual, physical and emotional well-being.
Spiritually:
Jesus Himself points us to the beauty of childlike wonder: “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). The spiritual life is serious, yes, but not somber. Saints like Philip Neri were known for their wit and joy, reminding us that light-heartedness has a place in holiness. A playful mind is open to wonder, it is not burdened by perfectionism, and is more able to receive God’s surprises with delight.
Physically:
God designed our bodies not only to labor, but to move freely and express joy. David danced before the Ark of the Covenant with abandon (2 Samuel 6:14). What a beautiful image of playful praise! Integrating playful movement, whether it’s dance, hiking, or joyful physical expression during a SoulCore Rosary, restores balance and energizes our physical well-being. It reminds us that our bodies are temples, not tools.
Emotionally:
Playfulness can be an antidote to heaviness. Even in suffering, there are moments where laughter breaks through as grace. St. Teresa of Ávila, who endured great trials, famously said, “God save us from gloomy saints!” Emotionally, play softens the heart and fosters connection. It reminds us that joy is a fruit of the Spirit, not a reward for having it all together.
In all three areas, playfulness draws us closer to the heart of God, who delights in His children. May we allow ourselves to be renewed through lightness, laughter, and the simple joy of being alive in Him.
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” – Nehemiah 8:10

Amen to playfulness! May we always remember the lightness, laughter and joys of living in Christ!
Beautiful Mary! Amen indeed!
