The Virtue of Trust: Leaning into Divine Providence

In a culture that often promotes self-reliance and control, the virtue of trust calls us to surrender—beautifully, wholeheartedly, and courageously—to Divine Providence. Trust, in the Catholic tradition, is more than a feeling; it is a theological virtue infused by God, rooted in faith, and animated by love.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6

Saint Faustina is a perfect example of someone who trusted in the Lord with ALL HER HEART!  “Jesus, I trust in You.”  These weren’t just words to her, she put this virtue into practice through every suffering and joy. Trust was her lifeline. What’s so beautiful is that God knew He could trust her to spread His message of Divine Mercy to all His children. What a powerful witness of St. Faustina placing her trust in God, and God placing His trust in her!

We do not need to be saints (yet) or have superhuman strength in order to live out this virtue of trust. The saints did not possess superhuman strength. What they had was radical trust in the One who does. The saints also taught us that trust is not the absence of suffering, it just means there’s a willingness to walk through it, confident that God is working all things for our good. (Romans 8:28).

One way we can grow in the virtue of trust is by praying and reflecting on the Mysteries of the Rosary. In SoulCore, we often talk about becoming a Living Rosary (ie: SoulCore Living) , which means living out the virtues that Jesus and Our Blessed Mother teach us by their example through the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Each time we pray the Rosary, we allow their example to shape us and transform us more fully into their image and likeness. As we put these virtues into practice, trust begins to take deeper root and becomes a steady foundation in our lives.

We invite you to take some time and meditate specifically on the 3rd Luminous Mystery, the Proclamation of the Kingdom. In this Mystery, Jesus doesn’t simply call us to hear the Gospel—He invites us to trust in it, live it, and allow it to transform our hearts. To trust in the Kingdom is to believe that God is moving even when we don’t understand, even when we can’t yet see the path ahead. It’s knowing that His plan is unfolding in the waiting and the wandering, and believing His promise to do infinitely more in our lives than we could ever imagine (Eph 3:20).

If you find yourself in a season where trusting God’s plan feels especially difficult, let the Rosary become your lifeline—your steady anchor and pathway to deeper trust and surrender. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and the communion of saints, ask for an increase in trust and the grace to believe—especially when it’s hard—that God is always moving, always working, and weaving all things together for good.

God’s plan for your life is not always predictable, but it is always providential. May we trust not only that He has a plan, but that He is the plan. And He is good.

Jesus, we trust in You.
