THE BEAUTY IN THE SUFFERING – A 6-WEEK COURSE

We are all familiar with suffering, but as Catholics, we are encouraged in Christ to see the immense beauty in the suffering.  In this 6-week live virtual course we will unpack the beautiful Apostolic Letter by Pope St. John Paul II – Salvifici Doloris (On the Christian Meaning of Suffering).  In each session, we will uncover a piece of this rich theology of suffering as we pray through the Pope’s words and reflect on provoking questions to expand our understanding of the true meaning of suffering and its redemptive value.  We will look at the image of Christ on the Cross as the marriage bed and our reception of Holy Communion, as the consummation of our marriage to Jesus the Bridegroom.  Each week we will also gaze upon a sacred image and pray a visio divina as an added prayer of the heart.

Each session will uncover a piece of this rich theology of suffering including:

  •   The Quest for an Answer to the Question of the Meaning of Suffering
  •   Jesus Christ Suffering Conquered by Love
  •   Sharers in the Suffering of Christ
  •   The Gospel of Suffering
  •   The Good Samaritan

The course Includes:

  • 6 virtual live sessions on the theology of suffering, closing each session with guided prayer
  • Accompanying Study Guide/Journal
  • Complete set of recordings for each of the 6 Sessions*

MEET YOUR LEADER NICKY VERNA, MA Th

Nicky Verna is a Catholic wife to her husband, Deacon Tom, and mother to four young adult children.  Nicky is a daily communicant and is very active in her parish, where she serves as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and Lector and also facilitates the Adult Faith Study Program.  She received her Masters in Theology from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary School of Theological Studies in May, 2020.  She serves as a board member for AbbeyFest Faith and Music Festival as well as serves on the planning committee for the Catholic Women’s Conference for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  Nicky is a member of the Unbound Prayer Ministry for the Archdiocese (Unbound – Queen of the Rosary).  She has been a fitness instructor since 1990, leading classes in a variety of formats including Pilates, aquatics, Zumba, Pound, senior fitness and as of 2018, has been a SoulCore Leader.
